knowledge building & sharing

“Ensuring (building, maintaining and sharing) sufficient cloud knowledge in the organisation”

overview

“Business goals must drive the solution and not technology restrictions caused by lack of knowledge”

At a high level, knowledge building and sharing is the process of capturing, distributing, and effectively using knowledge, which is acutely important to empower organisations to continuously deliver value in the ever changing world of (cloud)technology. Nowadays organisations need to act faster when a business opportunity presents itself. IT can no longer afford to take months implementing and deploying new business functionality. To accomplish this, business and IT need to re-skill themselves to be able to use the latest technologies ánd promote automation and agility.

This requires a continuous search for the most effective ways of knowledge sharing and building. Devops teams should be exposed to knowledge of the latest cloud services on the most prevalent platforms. They should be provided with processes, methods and recurring events to share their experiences and best practices. However, as the use of cloud technology has a major impact on the organisation beyond IT, the CCoE will have to maintain skills to coach and advise other stakeholders such as management, finance, procurement, etc. on cloud as well. A shared vocabulary needs to be established, and a multi-angled understanding of the challenges and change encountering those stakeholders needs to be developed.

All in all, an integrated approach towards building up knowledge and sharing it, is imperative and requires ongoing attention of which HR, product owners, managers but also each individual should be made aware of. A cloud consultant should start with a thorough assessment of current methods, needs, stakeholders, urgency, available budget and timeframes.  A concrete plan on how to address short term needs should follow next, after which a more sustainable plan should be drafted, coupled with strategic objectives, ownership and innovative methods to continuously build and share knowledge.

activities checklist

  • Coordinating with HR, PO’s teamleads and management with regards to current processes facilitating training and budgets
  • Defining KPI’s to measure knowledge building

recurring:

  • Sustaining effective knowledge building and sharing policy and processes
  • Implementing customised knowledge sharing programs and events
